Forts in Goa
Forts and monuments serve as a testimony of rich cultural and historical backgrounds of this western paradise of India, Goa. These remain the silent spectator of several Portuguese attacks on this majestic land and most of them are in a pathetic ruined condition. Historical monuments and forts occupy a pivotal position in making Goa a worthwhile travel halt. These forts need a calm exploration of the visitor for telling its embedded story, which were being enclosed for several centuries.
Some Major Goa Forts :
Aguada Fort : Aguada, a Portuguese word, meaning ‘water” stands near the river Mandovi. It is an eminent fort, a construction of 1612 A.D and a prime means of attraction of Goa. Aguada fort is the ultimate structure built to protect the place from external enemy attack from the sea. A segment of the fort has been converted into central jail. The fort stands close to many natural springs, the provider of Portuguese drinking water. It’s a major traveler attraction of Goa and a nice spot for relaxation and chill out.
Chapora Fort : Chapora is also a majestic catacomb of Goa built by Arch of Adil Shah, Bijapur. Situated near the Anjuna Beach the fort offers spectacular view of the sea sited atop a precipice. The fort is well preserved, besides a few ruins scattered here and there to give a mystic look of the spot. The Portuguese reconstructed the fort and gave it a new dimension, thus it can also be called as the ultimate example of Portuguese architecture.
Cabo de Rama : Cabo de Rama, a Portuguese construction situated at the southern coast of Goa. There chapel inside the fort was in an intact condition otherwise the fort remain almost in ruins. The chapel gives a magical look to the spot unless it has a naturally ruined look. According to the popular belief Lord Rama spend his divine days during his exile of 14- years.
Rock Cut Caves : Rock cut caves, regarded as among the antique forts of Goa is supposed to be the construction of the 5th or 6th century A.D. Located just 5 kms from Bicholim the caves are small having no articulate sculptures or paintings. As per Hindu Mythology the Pandavas, sought refuge in the Rock Cut Arvalem caves during their exile.
Terekhol Fort : Terekhol Fort, sited on the banks of the Terekhol River, was built by Maharaja of Sawanwadi. The fort was captured by Portuguese and rebuilt to a greater extend in the year 1764. Now it is a renowned heritage hotel, which offers beautiful views of endless sea and several majestic splendors of Goa.
