Feast of Bonderam

Good FridayEvery year on the fourth Saturday of August, the Feast of Bonderam is celebrated in Goa. It is celebrated at Divar Island that is located 12 km from Panjim. The word “Bonderam refers to a flag that had an interesting story behind it. There were two sections of the village-Piedalda and Sao Mathias, which frequently disputes over property matters that sometimes led to death also. To solve this problem, the Portuguese introduced a system of demarcation with different flags. However, cases like knock down of the flag with stones also arise.

Now-a-days, to honour the past mock fights were performed with toy weapons of bamboo stem between the rival groups. On the day of the feast, the land of Divar is agog with enthusiasm. All these are accompanied by melodious music. The youngsters dress up themselves with colourful clothes and witness the mock battles by assembling on the either side of the main fair.
