Hindu Festivals in Goa

Goa Hindu FestivalsInspite of a long period of colonial rule by the Portuguese, the land of Goa has retained a lot of Hindu festivals and celebrations. The Hindus form the majority of population in Goa. The Jatras of the local or family deity are celebrated at the temple of Gods and Goddess called Devasthan. Thousands of devotees take part in this celebration and procession. Other festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, Ramnavmi, Rakshabandhan and Holi are also celebrated.

Ganesha Chaturthi

One of the colourful festivals celebrated in Goa is the Ganesha Chaturthi. It is celebrated around the months of August or September. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and most peoples in Goa celebrate with great pomp and show. It is one of the most important festivals of the year.

Diwali

Diwali is also one of the major festivals celebrated in Goa. In fact, this festival of light is celebrated throughout the entire nation. According to Hindu mythology, the celebration was made in memory of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravan. During this day, lots of effigies of Ravan were burnt before sunrise in Goa.

Holi

Natives of Goa enjoy the festival of colors called “Holi”. Holi is a famous festival in which people drench each other in colourful powder and colourful water.

Rakshabandhan

Rakshabandhan celebrated in the month of August is a festival in which a sister ties colourful sacred threads around the wrists of their brothers. This festival is popularly known as Rakhi in Goa and also in rest of the country.

Ram Navmi

Ram Navmi is a festival celebrated in Goa on the occasion of birth anniversary of Lord Rama. During the festival of Ram Navmi, all the temples and images of Lord Rama are decorated with flowers.
